Women’s Soccer Wins National Championship

The Brookdale women’s soccer team became the NJCAA Division III National Champions this evening with a 4-3 victory over the Mohawk Valley Community College Hawks.

Brookdale took an early 1-0 lead with a goal from Caroline Duerr assisted by Chelsea James. Brookdale’s Brooke Tartis, added a second goal in the first half making it 2-0 Brookdale off of an assist from Kathleen Flannigan.

Mohawk Valley answered back with one goal of their own in the first half to make it 2-1 in favor of Brookdale. In the second half, Brookdale used the wind to their advantage when Alexa Masino drilled a 25 yard shot, scoring the third goal, assisted by Duerr to make the score 3-1. Mohawk Valley scored two quick goals late in the second half to tie it up 3-3. With 5:22 remaining on the clock, Keara Homan beautifully placed a corner kick on the head of Amanda Anastasia to score the 4th and final goal of the game, clinching the tittle for the Jersey Blues.

Chelsea James, Amanda Anastasia and Lauren Bowler were named to the All Tournament Team. Caroline Duerr was MVP of the Tournament, while Erin Kinnerman was named Defensive Player of the Tournament. Head Coach Katie Miller received Coach of the Tournament. This is the first national championship for the women’s soccer program and fifth national championship for Brookdale.

This was the first national tournament appearance for the Jersey Blues women’s soccer team since 2006. In 2006, Jersey Blues head coach Katie Miller was a member of that team that lost in the championship game to Richland College, 1-0.
