Two incoming Brookdale Community College freshmen, Ashley Riley of Neptune and Lance Wakefield, Jr., of Asbury Park, were each recipients of $1,000 scholarships awarded by The Central Jersey Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE). The students received their scholarships last week at a ceremony at the Neptune Higher Education Center (HEC).
Scholarships were awarded based upon financial need and commitment to service to the community. Applicants were required to write an essay on one of four topics, with most addressing the issue of gang violence and the measures that should be taken to ensure that young people make the right choices and reject gang affiliation.
Attending the ceremony were Chapter President Shelia Hobson, a retired homicide lieutenant with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office; Scholarship Committee Chairperson Selma Morris, a senior investigator with the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department and adjunct criminal justice professor at Brookdale; Det. Daniel Baldwin of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s office, also an adjunct criminal justice professor at Brookdale; and Lt. Eugene Stewart of the Neptune Township Police Department. Also attending were the recipients’ families and other members of the Central New Jersey NOBLE Chapter.
NOBLE is a national public service organization charged with finding solutions to law enforcement issues and concerns and meeting changing community needs. Since its formation last June, the Central Jersey Chapter has partnered with Brookdale’s Criminal Justice Department to achieve mutual goals. In addition to establishing the scholarship program, they have created an internship for Brookdale criminal justice majors and conducted a Law Enforcement Career Fair, which attracted more than 400 students and 28 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to the Brookdale campus.
