The Office of Student Life and Activities kicked off the Spring 2016 Laugh at Lunch series with a performance by up-and-coming comedian Josh Johnson. Named one of Comedy Central’s “Comics to Watch” in 2015, Johnson has performed at colleges and festivals across the country and works as an ensemble member of Under The Gun Theater in Chicago.
Johnson began his performance by filming a brief set with the Brookdale crowd, which he plans to use as part of a submission to The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The comedian then resumed his normal routine, telling uproarious jokes and self-deprecating anecdotes in his characteristic deadpan style for more than an hour.
The audience responded well to Johnson’s bits about his small stature, his experience being mugged and even his impersonation of a ceiling fan. A crowd favorite was Johnson’s description of staying overnight in a small hotel room with two men with sleeping disorders.
Nursing students Merlise Alexis and Mariyamah Meizongo said they didn’t know the comedian prior to his appearance, and extremely enjoyed themselves during the show.
“My cheeks hurt from laughing so hard,” said Alexis.
Laugh at Lunch is a monthly college life event offering free food and professional comedic entertainment in the Student Life Center during college hour.
The next performance, featuring comedic group Simply Unemployable, is scheduled for March 8 at 11:45 am. Check out the full calendar of upcoming Student Life events here.
