Hundreds of local music fans flocked to the Belmar boardwalk on July 27 for the third installment of this year’s Songwriters on the Beach concert series, co-hosted by Brookdale Public Radio and the Monmouth County Association of Realtors.

The free, open-air shows, held on the boardwalk between 5th and 6th avenues, will continue every Thursday evening through Aug. 31.

More than 400 fans turned out for the July 27 concert, headlined by guitar god Sonny Landreth and featuring New Jersey-born singer-songwriter Anthony Krizan.

A prolific songwriter and one of the most acclaimed slide guitarists in contemporary music, Landreth has recorded 12 solo albums throughout his 40-plus year career and performed or collaborated with a wide variety of industry giants, including Eric Clapton and Jimmy Buffet.

“This year’s lineup is possibly the best we have ever offered, and the July 27 concert was a great example of that,” said Brookdale Public Radio station manager Thomas Brennan. “We have a few weeks left, and we invite all community members to come hang out with us, relax in the sand and hear some truly amazing live music.”

Krizan, a native of Plainfield, first came to prominence in 1994 as guitarist for The Spin Doctors, touring the country, performing on national TV and opening for acts like the Rolling Stones during the band’s heyday.

He has since performed alongside musicians like Lenny Kravitz and John Waite, before releasing his first solo album in December.

“I want to thank Brookdale Public Radio for putting on this show,” said Krizan, addressing the crowd during his set on July 27. “It’s great to be able to play with Sonny Landreth, who is one of my guitar heroes. I always want to thank them just for playing great stuff on the radio, and for keeping real music alive here in New Jersey.”

Songwriters on the Beach will continue on Aug. 3 with Ari Hest and Keith Monacchio. Upcoming shows include The Grip Weeds and The Anderson Council on Aug. 10; Wesley Stace and The Howling Tongues on Aug. 17; Quiet Hollers and Peter Searcy on Aug. 24; and Anthony D’Amato and Don Dilego & The Touristas on Aug. 31.

All concerts begin at 7 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, concerts will be held inside the Taylor Pavilion. For the full concert schedule and more information visit www.90.5thenight.org.
