The Health Sciences Institute at the Spring Nursing Pinning Ceremony on May 28 in the Collins Arena recognized the accomplishments of 67 nursing graduates.

Student speaker and nursing graduate Steven Horakh called his fellow students “a fine group of selfless people who will risk illness and injury every day in order to care for and be there for those who need it most.”

The graduating nurses also participated in Brookdale’s 49th Commencement ceremonies on May 16th in addition to the pinning ceremony, a tradition in the health care field.

“It’s not graduation, and it’s not commencement which both celebrate going forward from the school out to another life. It is instead pinning, something that keeps us together,” said Dr. Jayne Edman, Dean of the Health Science Institute. “Tonight you will receive a pin that will serve as a visual reminder of all of the persistence, knowledge, strength, courage, and faith you needed to complete this program. The Brookdale nursing program sets very high standards and you rose to the occasion. Be proud, be joyful,” said Edman.

Nursing graduate Danielle Orr also addressed her peers.

“None of us would have gotten to this point alone,” said Orr. “We made it through the late night studying, dragging each other to class and motivating each other to do better through all the exams that continually got harder with higher expectations. We made it!”

Steven Horakh, Sarah McNeil, Michelle Nies, Nicole Sperling, and Christina Steuerman.

During the ceremony, six of the graduates were recognized for being in the Alpha Delta Nu Nursing Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Chapter: Steven Horakh, Sarah McNeil, Jean Mierop, Michelle Nies, Nicole Sperling, and Christina Steuerman.
