The Brookdale Jersey Blues men’s basketball team achieved perfection on March 17, completing an undefeated season and claiming the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DIII National Championship with a 70-57 win over second-seeded Nassau Community College.
The victory capped a season of the dominance for the Blues, who rattled off 31 straight wins during the regular season while defeating their opponents by an average of 25 points.
Ranked as the top seed in the nation, the squad then travelled to New York for the NJCAA national championship tournament, where they defeated three of the nation’s best teams by an average of 21.6 points and put the finishing touches on a perfect, 34-0 season.
The team was led in the national title game by sophomore guard/forward Grant Goode, who scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Freshman Tarique Holmes added 16 points, with 10 more coming from sophomore Jaimik Moore.
Tournament MVP honors went to sophomore Matthew Ringel, who averaged 12 points and two blocks per game throughout the tournament and dominated the title game with an astounding 25 rebounds.
Head coach Paul Cisek, who earned Region XIX Coach of the Year honors earlier this month, was named the Gary Cole Coach of the Tournament.
The championship is the second in five years for Brookdale’s men’s basketball team. The program won its first ever national title in 2013.
With the win, the Jersey Blues became the first team DIII team since 2007 to record an undefeated championship season.
