Exploring Manhattan’s Alphabet City

An intriguing end-of-summer Outreach, Business, and Community Development (OBCD) program found Brookdale Tour and Talkers exploring Manhattan’s Alphabet City. The Walking tour, led by NYC guide Jared Goldstein, covered this lesser-known section of NYC – parts made infamous by the Broadway show Rent, the Thompson Square Park Riots, and many gritty movies including Mixed Blood and Flawless. The tour chronicled the East Village community’s role in the transformation of abandoned buildings and vacant lots into vibrant community spaces and gardens – a part of Manhattan that now boasts more than 50 community gardens – and a fascinating history of immigrant populations.
