Brookdale faculty and staff came together May 15 to honor the college’s past, acknowledge its vibrant present and envision the promise of its future during Scholar’s Day 2014. Dr. Murphy called upon faculty and staff to continue their collaboration to keep the dream of a college education alive.
In keeping with the theme, Past, Present, and Promise of Brookdale Community College, long-time employee Barbara Boyington spoke of the collaboration and dedication of her colleagues.
“Brookdale is great because of you,” she told the group.
She said the excitement she felt when first arriving on campus still exists today, a sentiment reiterated by Dr. Murphy, who added that future Brookdale employees will feel it, too.
“Long after all of us are gone, the college will prevail with the same passion and energy as today,” Dr. Murphy said.
The keynote speakers were followed by 35 presentations by faculty, staff and police during three rounds of 45-minute breakout sessions. Topics ranged from the practical, the pedagogical and the playful. Among them were a how-to session on using energy medicine to relieve stress, a trip into the mind of Bob Dylan and strategies for engaging students.
The Teaching and Learning Center demonstrated ways to use multimedia and hypermedia to promote active learning. The Brookdale police spoke on preparing for and responding to safety and security issues. An interdisciplinary team of faculty discussed best practices in course design when teaching web-enhanced, face-to-face and fully on-line courses.
