Collage 2013 Receives Columbia Silver Medal

The 2013 Collage Student Magazine of the Arts was awarded the Silver Medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, a program affiliated with Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) is an international student press association comprised of student journalists and faculty advisers. Each year, student newspapers, magazines, yearbooks and online media submit issues to the association, and adviser-judges critique them based upon a written set of standards.

Collage consists of original student poetry, prose, photography, graphics, drawings, paintings and computer images. Students are involved in the editing, book design and publishing. The 2013 magazine also includes examples of student architectural and interior design, three dimensional works in clay and photo representations of student jewelry, entries which do not fit the mold of a traditional literary magazine.

“We felt we wouldn’t be representing the richness of Brookdale’s art offerings without breaking out of the genre and really showcasing what happens here at Brookdale,” said faculty co-adviser Marie Maber, associate professor of art.

The 2013 Collage staff included creative director Martynas Siuksta; literary editors Dan Kaufman and Sarah Viveca; art editor Courtney McCann; and faculty co-advisers Marie Maber and Michael Broek, assistant professor of English.  The magazine was published with the support of Richard Pfeffer, dean of enrollment development and student affairs; Robert Quinones, director of student life and activities; and Barbara Peterson, associate director of creative services.
