Brookdale students finish college degrees before their high school diplomas

from the Asbury Park Press

MIDDLETOWN – Kaiya Jones was in a unique position when she accepted her associate degree from Brookdale Community College on Thursday in the Robert J. Collins Arena.

This 18-year-old Neptune student is already halfway to completing her four-year college degree, but she hasn’t yet received her high school diploma.

Her diploma from Poseidon Early College High School, a dual-enrollment partnership between Neptune Township School District and Brookdale, will come later this June. This aspiring pre-medical student has spent the past four years of high school simultaneously working on her college degree through the community college.

“I feel great. It’s refreshing to know that when I go to college, I won’t have to complete a traditional four years,” said Jones, who will be attending Spelman College in Atlanta in September. “It makes me feel like I accomplished a lot at a young age.”
